Overall, 2009 turned out to be one of our best seasons ever. Generally the weather was great throughout the season, which allowed everyone to hunt hard for a good old ram, and as a result we averaged over 11 years old and 38” on rams taken. Nearly 60% of the hunters this year were repeat clients, and generally everyone came prepared and ready to hunt, which always adds to the enjoyment and success of each trip. There seemed to be plenty of long horned rams around this season, as we ended up taking 12 over 39”, and 5 rams over 160 B and C. The highest scoring ram this year was a dandy 13 year old taken by Chuck Edwards on a July hunt, which gross scored 166, even though he was broomed back 5” on one side!
The caribou hunting this year was some of the best we’ve seen to date, both on the early season and late season hunts. We attribute this to a healthy population, but also spring/early summer weather conditions that were just right for antler growth. Of the caribou harvested, 13 bulls gross scored over 400”, and the largest bull taken was by Cole Pilling on an August hunt, which grossed an amazing 469”, making it probably one of the largest caribou taken anywhere in a long time.
The moose hunting was very good, and our three mixed bag hunters all went home with nice moose. The population seems to be getting stronger every year, and we look forward to taking a couple of moose/caribou combo hunters beginning next fall.
